Rob Thompson

I am an average 21 year old guy from San Jose, California, who was in a car accident June 23, 2008. I suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. My desire to be a member of team CarboRocket is not to do something extraordinary, but something very ordinary. I want to walk again.

I feel lucky that I am alive and that I can work to get better. Since I was released from the hospital, I’ve been in a wheelchair. I attend two therapies a day to get back to normal. During the week I have two sessions of speech therapy, two sessions of occupational therapy, three sessions of physical therapy, and three sessions of myofascial therapy. I continue to make improvements in all of these areas.

Because of my brain injury, my left side is weaker and harder to control than my right. I call it my “wife side” because it is attached to me, but doesn’t do what I want it to.

When I am home, I like to play Wii and visit with friends. A great weekend is when I can spend the night in Santa Cruz with my brother, Rick, and my sister, Becky. They are cool and I love that they live close by.

I live with my parents. My mom is a teacher and keeps a journal of my progress at: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/robthompson.  I call her Puttles, because she putters around a lot. My dad is a mechanical engineer and avid cyclist. I call him Tinkers, because he is always working on a project. Lately, he is designing a bike for me so we can ride together.

When I was younger, we biked together and I gave myself the nickname, “Human Gear.”
In the hospital, before I could speak again, I would make kissing sounds to the nurses and therapists I liked. One of the therapists called me “The Ladies’ Man.” I like that nickname.

I am so glad to have been chosen as a member of Team CarboRocket. I love bike riding.
A bike will give me some independence and help me walk again.

Good luck to all the members in reaching their goals.

Rob – You are so funny! I am still giggling about the “wife side” comment, and I made my husband stop working on the computer so I could read it to him. You made my day. I have been following your progress since the beginning of your journey, and seeing your article and pictures today made me smile. You don’t know me – I am a friend of Claire’s, but I care a lot about you and your progress!
