First Bike Ride in Two Years

August 29, 2010

This has been an exciting month. Two weeks ago, Rob got, Deirdre, his companion dog.

Last weekend was the first test ride on the nearly completed tandem bike. After two years, to say Rob’s legs are out of shape is an understatement. Dave needed to maintain a slow cadence as Rob adjusts to using both legs again.

The bike is set up so that both Dave’s and Rob’s pedals are connected. Once Dave sets a pace, Rob must follow it. Part of Dave’s challenge is to maintain a cadence where Rob participates in the pedaling. Dave noticed when he goes too fast that Rob isn’t able to keep up. The test ride was shorter than anyone wanted because Rob was complaining of pain in his left ankle.

Here’s a video of the test drive:

Last Thursday, a reporter and photographer for the local newspaper, came out and interviewed Dave and Rob about the bike. We made sure that Rob was wearing his CarboRocket shirt for all the pictures.

Today, the bike is even closer to completion. Rob now has handles connected to the steering which Dave controls as well. The idea is that while Dave steers, Rob’s brain is getting feedback on the correct positioning and movements for steering on his own.

Like any great mechanic/inventor, Dave uses the rides to check how the bike fits Rob and to get more information on what design ideas are needed. Today he noticed that he will need to build a chain guide pulley to keep the chain from hitting the bottom of Rob’s seat. Rob’s headrest is still being developed and a prototype should be ready soon. Several people have suggested drink holders, so they will be installed as well. The last step will be paint and then stickers. Dave already noticed that a Fat Cyclist sticker covers the end of the main tube perfectly.

Here’s a video of today’s ride:

Rob loves being able to bike again but gets discouraged because he doesn’t feel he’s made much progress.

Wow! What incredible accomplishments! Kudos to Rob for getting back on the bike – the first turns of the pedals are always the hardest! And kudos to Dave for being so creative and determined to come up with a tandem that works for both cyclists.

Rob, you truly are an inspiration! Keep up the great work!

Rob and Dave, congratulations on the beginning of many miles and many adventures to come. You are an inspiration and I’m so honored to be a part of the same team as you.

    Keep the rubber side down…Christy

Discouraged for not making much progress? I work in an office with 60 people, and there are only a few people who ride a bike. Everyone is physically able to, but very few people do it. The fact that you’re overcoming challenges and still riding is amazing! Good job!
